eSIMs are coming to Vodafone

As part of our 5G ecosystem rollout, we will integrate eSIMs for eligible mobile devices. We’re expecting to have this functionality available on Pay Monthly plans in 2021.

eSIM means ‘electronic’ SIM and is a SIM card that’s embedded into your mobile device, instead of being a separate card that you swap in and out. On more advanced eSIM-capable devices, people have greater flexibility to manage their connections and use advanced features such as dual SIM capability.

Your phone or wearables (e.g. smartwatches) can have additional eSIMs (embedded SIM or non-physical SIM) that can be coded as needed, opening up enhanced possibilities for what you can do with them. For example, eSIM technology allows your smartwatch to function independently, without requiring pairing to your phone.

5G combined with eSIM functionality will also be useful when you need seamless network access across different geographic locations. It will help to deliver smarter machine-to-machine performance, as more sensors will have cellular data.
The arrival of 5G is expected to usher in a new wave of 5G enabled dual-sim phones and wearables over the next few years. We expect to see significant advances in capabilities as manufacturers embrace 5G over the next 12-18 months.

However as there is eSIM capability and features in the 4G environment, we will aim to support this when we begin rolling out eSIMs in 2021, with delays from originally expected timelines as a result of COVID-19 and project reprioritisation.
