eSIMs

eSIM is coming to Vodafone

As part of our ongoing 5G ecosystem roll-out, we will integrate eSIM capability for phones and wearables that use eSIM technology.
We expect to have eSIM functionality available with our Pay Monthly plans in 2021.

eSIM stands for 'electronic SIM', which means it is a SIM that is embedded into your mobile device, instead of being a separate card that you can swap in and out.
'SIM' by itself simply stands for Subscriber Identity Module.
On more advanced eSIM-capable devices, people will have greater flexibility to manage connections and use advanced features such as dual-SIM capability.

Your mobile phone or wearable (e.g. smartwatches) can have additional eSIMs (embedded SIM or non-physical SIM) that can be coded as needed, opening up enhanced possibilities for what you can do with them. For example, eSIM technology allows your smartwatch to function independently, without requiring pairing to your phone.

5G combined with eSIM functionality will also be useful when you need seamless network access across different geographic locations. It will help to deliver smarter machine-to-machine performance, as more sensors will have cellular data.
The arrival of 5G is expected to usher in a new wave of 5G enabled dual-sim phones and wearables over the next few years.
We expect to see exciting and significant advances in technological capabilities as manufacturers embrace 5G and IoT in the coming years.

However, as there is eSIM capability and features in the 4G environment, we aim to support this when we begin rolling out eSIMs in 2021, with delays from originally expected timelines as a result of COVID-19 and project reprioritisation.
