What is LPWAN?

Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) describes a category of wireless communication technologies designed to support Internet of Things (IoT) deployments. Vodafone is rolling out NB-IoT and LTE-M to support your IoT solutions.

What are LPWAN technologies designed to deliver?

icon-network-signal.png

Extended coverage in large areas

even when underground or deep within buildings.
icon-battery.png

Great power efficiency

some devices can run on the same battery for up to 10 years.

Low cost communications hardware

enable data collection devices to be cheaper

Low bandwidth

with most connections requiring just a few bytes of data to be transmitted per day

Check our coverage maps for NB-IoT and CAT-M1

To get the fast data speed of 5G, you need to be in an area with 5G coverage, have a 5G phone from Vodafone, and be on a 5G ready plan.

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is also known as '4G Voice' or '4G Calling'. 4G Calling means that your phone call can be made over 4G networks. To use 4G Calling, you'll need a VoLTE capable mobile phone, and a 4G enabled plan. A software update to your device may be required in order to enable VoLTE. See our online help to learn about VoLTE capable phones, and what to expect with software updates.

Note: This coverage map is indicative only, and is intended to provide general guidance on where the Vodafone network and outdoor coverage is available. Coverage may vary depending on your exact location and the type of device used.

Frequently Asked Questions

What LPWAN networks do you support?

NB-IoT and LTE-M

What LPWAN modules do you support?

  • Ublox Sara R410M
  • Quectel BG96
  • Telit ME910C1-AU

Where do you have LPWAN coverage?

What bands/frequencies do you operate on for LPWAN?

  • NB-IoT – Band28 (700Mhz)
  • LTE-M – Band 3 (1800Mhz) and Band 28 (700Mhz)

What SIM card is needed to access the LPWAN networks?

The SIM card must have 4G/LTE enabled to access the LPWAN networks. We recommend the IoT Data Plans for local connectivity.

I have a global SIM (another provider) trying to roam onto NZ's LPWAN networks, why isn't it working?

We have no (or a very limited amount) of roaming agreements for NB-IoT, hence the SIM roaming into NZ’s NB-IoT network likely would not work.

What APN can I use to access the LPWAN networks?

The APN "iot" should be used. Note: SIM must have 'unverified' provisioned in one of the APN slots (this is usually provisioned a default). The APN "vodafone" can also be used but "iot" is recommended for a better network experience.
