We’re upgrading the technology used for your landline phones to voice over broadband (VoIP) to keep your business competitive and prepared for the future.

What is voice calling over broadband?

It’s the latest in phone technology that uses broadband to deliver calls, instead of old traditional fixed phone lines.

Your phone numbers will stay the same, and you’ll continue to have the same great features included with your existing Office Net plan, just on a newer service.

If it’s not, we recommend visiting your local electronics or appliance store and ask for a cordless DECT phone (Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephone). This will come with two or more handsets; one to use as a base station next to your modem, and others where suitable for your business. If you would like to continue using your wall ports instead of the modem, ask us about integrated wiring, available with Fibre installations (a charge applies).

Does your business have an EFTPOS terminal?

Have a chat to your EFTPOS supplier about changing to a broadband or mobile service before you upgrade. The EFTPOS industry has been using broadband solutions to deliver their services for some time. Most EFTPOS terminals use broadband rather than a dial up phone line. However, if you have an older EFTPOS terminal it may only work on dial up. We recommend you talk to your EFTPOS supplier if you have any questions.

Check out your fax’s make/model to see if it will work over broadband. While most faxes will work on voice over broadband, it depends on the make and model - some older machines may not work over broadband. However, if fax is crucial to your business we encourage you to explore other ways to use fax capability, such as fax to email services. An option for your business is a provider called TNZ, find out more about TNZ's fax services.

Ensuring your current equipment will continue to work into the future is a very important discussion we strongly recommend you have with your monitored alarm provider before your upgrade. They will be able to help find the best solution for you.


Does your business have a lift emergency phone that you are billed for?

We recommend you call us on 0800 888 257 and do not switch to voice over broadband until you have contacted your Lift Service Provider and ensured the lift emergency phone is not reliant on a dial up phone line. There are alternative solutions available that your provider can you help you with.

Get your Vodafone modem and phone ready

If you already have a Vodafone supplied modem, with model number HG659, HG556 or SHG1500, you can continue using this, or just give us a call on 0800 888 257 and we’ll send one out to you.

Either use your existing phone, we’ll provide you with a new wireless phone, or you can also ask your local appliance store for a cordless DECT phone (Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephone).


What do I need to do?
If you have voicemail, you’ll need to save messages you want to keep.

They won’t carry across, so if you’d like to keep your messages, do this before you switch.

A simple way to do this is by playing the message on your landline, get your mobile out and press record on your ‘voice recorder’ app.  If you need help with this, call us on 0800 888 257.

What do I need to do?
Plug your phone into the back of the modem

If you have a cordless phone, plug the base station into ‘Phone 1’ port on the back of the modem, and other phones at another location around your premises.

The modem port fits a size ‘RJ-11’. If your phone cable doesn’t fit, you might need to pick up an adaptor from your local appliance store.

You won’t need to plug your phone into the wall jack points anymore.

You’ll also need to set up any other features you had before you upgraded. Find out how.

If there is a broadband or power outage, voice over broadband won’t work, including emergency calls to 111. Always have a charged mobile phone handy, or look into a backup power supply as an option.

Can I use my current phone or do I need to get a new one?
Your current phone will work but you may need an adaptor to make the end of the cable small enough to plug into your modem (You can ask in any appliance store for one that fits a size RJ-11). If you have multiple phones connected to jack points around your premises or you rely on a phone that’s not next to your modem, it’s a good idea to purchase a wireless phone, one to plug into the modem, and others somewhere convenient to you. Ask for a cordless DECT phone in your local appliance store before your upgrade.

Can I use the same modem?
You need to use either a white Vodafone HG659 wireless modem or Vodafone supplied modems with the model numbers HG556 or SHG1500 will also work. If you don’t have one of these modems, call us on 0800 888 257 and we’ll send you one free.

Will my landline phone work when there’s a power cut or broadband outage?
Voice over broadband relies on power and a working broadband connection to operate (including emergency calls to 111). We recommend you always have a charged mobile phone or back up power supply handy. If you have trouble connecting to the mobile network, please call us on  0800 888 257.

Do I need to do anything differently with my voicemail?
Your voicemail will have the same features, but it will be on a new system, so any saved voicemail messages won’t carry across when you upgrade. Go to our Voicemail FAQ for more details.
