Set up roaming

There are a few things you need to do before you leave to set up your Vodafone mobile for Roaming.

Enable your On Account mobile

Setting up Roaming is free.

Simply call 777 from your Vodafone mobile a few days before you leave, or visit a Vodafone store.

If your mobile is connected to a business plan we'll need your boss' approval.

You'll need to decide whether you use our Standard Roaming service or choose our zone-based Traveller service.

Roaming is subject to credit criteria.

Check your mobile works where you're going

Your Vodafone New Zealand mobile works on most networks, but not all. Check the listing for the country you're going to. If their frequency is listed as 900 or 1800, you're definitely OK. If it's 1900, your mobile will need to be Tri band. If it's the rare 850, it will need to be Quad band. Not sure about your mobile? Look up the 'band' in our online manuals.

If your mobile doesn't work at your destination, you might want to rent one that does, or upgrade to a new one.

I want to check out all the places where Roaming is available

If you're heading off on a cruise, Roaming is also available in international waters.

Some destinations follow a different frequency from Vodafone New Zealand's 3G network.

If you are travelling to Korea, Japan or the USA you will need to check whether your mobile is compatible with their networks. This is essential to check before you go. Some providers allow you to rent their mobiles.

Extended Roaming

If you're heading to certain parts of Africa, the Middle East or South America you'll need to use Extended Roaming.

To do this you can swap your current SIM card for a new one online or you can visit the Vodafone store at Auckland or Christchurch airport.

When you get your new SIM card call 777 using your existing SIM card and quote the number on the back of your new SIM card to the customer services representative. Your new card will be activated.

Your phone number will remain the same, but remember if you store your contacts on your SIM you'll need to transfer them to your new SIM.

What it costs to use Roaming

The cost of calls you make while you're overseas depends on the destination you're in and whether you're on our Vodafone Traveller plan or using our Standard Roaming plan.

You'll be charged a flat fee of $1 per minute when receiving calls, and 80c per TXT sent anywhere in the world.

Updating your contacts

You can dial New Zealand numbers easily from overseas if they are formatted with +64 at the beginning (and they work perfectly like that when you're at home too).

Simply replace the first zero of an area code or mobile number with a +64.

03 345 6789 becomes +64 3 345 6789

021 345 678 becomes +64 21 345 678
