Saving battery life

If like me, you love sharing photos from events, you’ve probably run into the low battery warning but there’s still hours to go!

One small tip to help save your battery is to switch to Low Quality Image Mode (Settings > Messages) so all those photos you’re sharing will still look good but eat a lot less juice in the uploading process.

While on the home screen in iOS8, you can double tap the home button. Like usual, this will display your active apps, allowing you to scroll through and pick up where you left off.

However now there's an added bonus. Your phone will display the most recent contacts you've spoken to. Swipe from left to right in this area, and you'll also see your "Favourites".

To make people favourites: Click on the phone app, then Favourites (bottom left corner), then the + symbol in the right top corner. This will bring up your contact list and you can now select who will become your favourite contacts.

Ensure you don't miss out

The new Notify Me feature in iOS 8 allows you to set alerts on any particular email thread. It's quite common for people to switch off email notifications. This way, you can be confident you won't miss out on anything important.

To enable thread notifications, swipe left from the message list > More > Notify Me.

You'll now notice when receiving or sending email, an icon in the shape of a bell in the subject field. Click on the bell to choose whether or not your phone will alert you to this email thread.

Background App Refresh

Background App Refresh

We all know apps use battery. But some apps are far more important than others. You may find it more important to have regular emails come through over Facebook updates or vice versa. The great news is you can personalise your device to devote the amount of data to whatever apps you like.

Go to Setting > General > Background App Refresh and you'll find a list of your apps. From there you can disable and enable which apps automatically refresh and update.

iOS Web speed vs data saving icon

Apple’s web browser in iOS 8.4, Safari, will preload the first result when you search, which makes things fast if you want that result but could also use data unnecessarily if you don’t.

You can turn this off by going Settings > Safari > Preload Top Hit and set to off.
