Which BlackBerry solution?

There are two ways to mobilise your email with BlackBerry based on what type of email you use. If you're with a medium or larger organisation with your own IT email server, you'll be after the "BlackBerry Server" solution. If you are an individual or smaller organisation that uses ISP email or webmail then you need the "BlackBerry Internet Service which is fast, simple and can get your email onto your handset within minutes.

BlackBerry Internet Service – mobile email for everyone

If you're like most people and smaller businesses and have an ISP (like ihug , ClearNet or Xtra)* hosting your email,or you use webmail (Gmail, Hotmail), then you can connect to your email through the BlackBerry Internet Service. Whether you want a BlackBerry for yourself, or all your mobile staff, all you need to do is link your ISP email or webmail to your BlackBerry. This can be done easily online or right from the handset itself. Each BlackBerry can access up to ten different email accounts so you can have a mix of work and personal accounts.

To synchronise your contacts, calendar and multi-media files with your desktop PC you can use the Desktop Manager software which comes with your handset.

*Some ISP's may require the purchase of an additional service to allow mail to be sent to your BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Server – seriously mobile email for large organisations

If your organisation has its own email server (e.g. Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino or Novell Groupwise) then you can unleash the power of the BlackBerry server. This separate BlackBerry server sits alongside your email server, and constantly "pushes" any new email messages, calendar appointments, contacts, tasks, memos or data applications out to your fleet of BlackBerry Handhelds. When you and your mobile workers, managers and key people return to the office, everything on their BlackBerry synchronised up with the email server and their desktop computer.

The BlackBerry server comes in two versions depending on the size of your organisation:

A. For 1 to 30 users - BlackBerry Professional Software (BPS): this server software is specially designed for smaller business customers with their own email servers. It can be installed on the same server hardware that the email server is running on and has a simplified installation procedure to assist IT administrators. It also has simplified Administration tools making it easy to manage your BlackBerry users. If you need to expand beyond 30 users then you can upgrade to the BES server as described below. Anyone can download a free copy of BPS that supports 1 active user – go to the BPS Express page for more information. You can then purchase additional user licenses as required up to a maximum of 30 users.

B. For 20 users and above – BlackBerry Enterprise Software (BES): the BES server software is the fully featured Enterprise software designed for larger organisations with their own email server. It starts at 20 users and can scale up from there to support any number of users. It has many advanced security, user management and administration features designed to help an IT Manager efficiently look after a large fleet of BlackBerry users. Go to our BES page for more information.
