Our Casual Data option allows you to continue using the internet at a rate of 3 cents per MB

Bridging the digital divide for rural NZ

Bridging the digital divide for rural NZ

Rural-based New Zealanders need fast, reliable mobile and broadband coverage, so we're putting our networking weight behind the RBI (Rural Broadband Initiative). By constantly improving and extending our 3G and 4G coverage in country areas, our rural customers get better value from their mobile plans, smartphones and broadband connections.

As part of the RBI, the Government has ensured that all new towers built under the RBI are 4G-ready. We are starting to roll out 4G in rural areas and will continue to roll out super-fast 4G across rural New Zealand over the next 5 years. This will bring ultra fast broadband speeds to rural communities.

When we’re finished we’ll have over 150 new rural cell sites built and over 380 existing cell sites upgraded. This will deliver an incremental 6200 square km of new coverage, 4000km of additional road coverage, and a further 250,000 rural addresses will have access to super-fast Rural Broadband.

Better rural communities

Our rural communities play a major role in New Zealand's economy. By providing fast, reliable connectivity, we can help remove the 'digital divide' that currently exists between rural and urban areas.

The delivery of better coverage and faster data speeds will support better staff retention in rural businesses and on farms, easier communication with family and friends, education benefits, and better access to healthcare and health-related information.

It also offers access to emerging applications and devices that can help businesses, such as sensors and meters for machine to machine (M2M) communications systems.
