Gypsea had a difficult start in life, being born with a rare disorder which means her tummy can only hold 10ml at a time, along with curvature of the spine and an airway disorder that makes it hard for Gypsea to breathe.
Gypsea had several major surgeries at Starship Hospital before the age of two. Due to complications she has needed a number of trips on the Starship Air Ambulance to receive the specialist medical care required for her conditions. This has included spending time on a mechanical heart and lung machine in Starship’s Heart Unit.
She is now two and a half, and on the last visit to Starship she had metal rods inserted into her spine to correct the curvature. These will need to be lengthened over time as she grows, until she is old enough to have her spinal vertebrae fused.
It is a lot to go through at such a young age. Despite all this when she is at home Gypsea is a normal happy and very active toddler, which may not have been possible without Starship’s Air Ambulance Service.
